Therapy is a confidential process aimed at helping you achieve greater insight and understanding of yourself through addressing your concerns and by learning effective coping skills. Counseling involves a relationship between yourself and a professional trained counselor who has a desire to help you achieve your therapeutic goals.
Counseling involves sharing personal and sensitive material that may at times bring up unfamiliar or uncomfortable feelings. These feelings of anxiety or confusion that may arise are normal, and your counselor will be available to guide and support you through the process.
Your therapist will ask you to bring your completed intake forms with you to session. Expect to discuss your current struggles and symptoms with your therapist, provide background information, and discuss what your hopes and goals you have for the future. You should also clarify what your expectations or preferences are for therapy, and ask any questions you may have.
Clients get the most out of therapy when they are open, honest, and willing to explore their thoughts, feelings and emotions. Change doesn’t happen overnight, so being patient with your progress is also important. The work you do in between sessions is what contributes the most to growth and change.
This depends on the complexity of your struggles, your motivation, and your goals. Some clients prefer more intensive short-term therapy, while others use therapy as part of their regular self-care regimen. Talk with your therapist about your timeline.
